Misheard Lyrics

Yes! What do you think Bob Dylan was singing?

  1. Hey Adam thanks for the vote of confidence but I'm done... I'm (& I hope that I'm not assuming too much) with Scotch & Gaie & therefore out.
Big Babs is obviously non receptive to the notion of change albeit development of the programme's ethos & looks to "CBBC's" for mainstream influence! Christ! Just how long has it been since a generation of teenagers lead a change in popular music... Late 80's & RAVE ach, w.t.f. do I know.

Anyhow... Here's the reply to "their" email sent on Saturday past,

Given the dust now appears to be settling on your Facebook page I now wish to respond to your communication.

May I firstly be allowed to reply to your response to my Facebook comment and that I am a little surprised at your reaction to that particular remark.

Wednesday was surprisingly very popular (given Progressive Rocks usual perceived standing) and I noted more listeners than usual we're actually "chatting" on Facebook as opposed to merely registering requests. Being genuinely pleased I saw a similarity to the former blog and wished to share this thought in keeping with Facebook ethos.
I suspect you (whoever you are given you contacted me whilst at work & without stating your relationship to GIO) have read something into that statement that simply wasn't there.
However, having said that & as a licence payer I am entitled to express an opinion. GIO currently occupies a slot when I wish the be entertained by BBC Radio Scotland and so long as it is with due courtesy and respect I will continue to feel justified in doing so.

Having mentioned common courtesy, your long overdue explanation with regard to the decision re withdrawal of your Blog came as no surprise. It is my opinion this was a deliberate and divisive move to stimulating a reaction between your perceived audience groups.

In closing please don't contact me ever again without stating who you are and your relationship with the programme / BBC.

  44. A while back early one Sunday morning when Tony Blackburn was standing in for someone or other on R2 he seemed to be having a conversation with a listener who was apparently phoning from the 'West End of Glasgow'....It was quite a bizarre conversation where Tony asked what the weather was like and the reply, oft repeated, was that it was a sparkling sunny day out my window......as I looked round through the windows of my car all I could see was cloud as clear as dishwasher right in the heart of the 'West End of Glasgow'....this conversation I found disturbing and I couldn't quite figure what was going on.....it was as if Tony was conversing with someone who was talking in tongues......well...........sometimes I get this same eerie feeling with GIO...there is a conversation going on for sure but not with everybody....there is some form of covert dialogue taking place........I am not a statistician but I can do hard sums.... I would have thought that the frequency of those who text in for a 'tune' only to find that they have just missed it stretches the meaning of 'statistically insignificant', as another example of this strange sort of conversation I heard with TB.
I often think the programme is having a private joke, with who?,....so Jude the Obscure?.....two Jude songs plus the montage....seems a statistical anomaly too far, for me, as well - and not a very well concealed cryptic kind of nodding in some direction or other.
So yes, there is a dialogue and it is *obscured* by the occasional bone to the listener(s)......so who for example is 'fergie in aberdeen'.......why always the emphasis on the whole name?...it may all be completely innocent, but I don't think so....which is one of the reasons those most coveted of jobs like the telephone boy are never publicly advertised to allow young people with the wrong postcode to get a job in the BBC.....not much accountability there....in fact as T_F observes make too much noise and you are banished.....I'm quite good at reading body language and I think I'm quite good at listening language too....I've spent a career doing just that.

    2. Dale, you've got something there.
I've often wondered what memorisation technique particularly the Disc Spinner adopts...
perhaps Chunking being the oldest method works best when the order of the items is not important. Rhyming makes use of the fact that we have a natural tendency to remember rhymes and rhythms I.E. why "Madmac" got credited with too many mainstream titles back in the day?
You've also got Mediation/Bridging & Austin Lafferty our "celeb lawyer" & Norrie's pal seems to match this technique.
Lastly maybe in "their" sickly sweet world it's Bed-time Recital but given Ms Babs recent resistance to the suggestion of change to "Luvvies CBBC's nice radio" I can't see her sleeping after thinking about recent feedback problems and there being a chance of arriving at a solution the next day... do you?

Ah ken DC but still worth watching again.

    3. I think, and I'm no statistician either but why should that stop me, statistics would show that GIO is as far from random as you can get. Statistics would show that a very small minority of the contributing listeners have their songs played, that some people are mentioned every single night no matter what, and that others, like Thing-Fish were routinely cold-shouldered and then made fun of by playing Cliff Richard, a little piece of playground bullying in response to criticism of the programme's unadventurous playlist. Statistics would show - where's Capt Ramius when you need him? that out of the song-base of, what did they say, 100,000 songs, they play a tiny proportion over and over and over and then massage the figures by throwing in at most one or two oddities to keep their boasted status of 'eclecticism'.
And yet every so often they'd read out someone's plaintive cry that 'you never play any of my requests' - statistics can't make that any more easy to understand and I imagine that looking at the number of requests for certain artists on the banned list would throw the whole thing into even more confusion.

In fact I'm so confused I'd better have some breakfast.
