Gut Fawkes Night
A CD that Skips
Ages
Guilty pleasures
Ok I take it back.....
I'm sick of hearing in the media that the UK don't 'do' Hallowe'en. I can't remember a time when Scottish children didn't go out guising. Calling it trick or treating and demanding sweets or you'll have your house egged is an unwanted, recent development but, typically, the English (supposed to be British) media don't do their research properly. I've always known children chapping the door in costume, singing songs or telling jokes/poems for sweeties. Why, one year my Dad was overwhelmingly (and very surprisingly) impressed by George Kane's burped rendition of the National Anthem! Jx
I think you can move your ire onto Guy Fawkes night now. Mind you I was quite interested to read that guising comes from the notion of dressing up the kids in old clothes and disguising them so the spirits would not steal them away on eve of the hallows. Or something like that. Of copurse we only had old clothes and that is probably why I was never stolen by the gohstly spirits...
Here in Greenock we do galoshans. I never heard the term till I came to live here, I think it's very local, but one of the primary schools has a campaign afoot to get it more universally used.
Previously on the blog... Been away golfing since Friday morning so missed how your predos got on Billy. Not too good then? Thanks for the visit Thing-Fish. Had you come in a Halloween skeleton costume we could have quipped "Long time no sea."
I'll have a go, but I daresay many walks to work, lengths of the pool before I can come up with anything that is both songs I like and reasonably truthful about me.
Whurs Git Fawkes to be found these days? BTW gonnae gie me an example of a Bonfire favourite, "Campfires burning, campfires burning..", "Rocket Man ~ Elton" I dunno anymore.
Surely the audience will all be outside waving sparklers above their heads as opposed to listening to GIO?
Dont know about Roddy Hart, but Sara Cox produced another fine "Sounds of the 80s" show on Saturday. Guests Sheila E and Colin Hay. Quite a bit of correspondence read out too, so Cox _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Norrie.
Tick Tick Boom – The Hives Fireworks – Siouxsie & The Banshees Burning Down The House – Talking Heads Bang Bang – B.A. Robertson Handle With Care – Travelling Wilburys Song for Guy - Elton John Bonfire Heart - James Blunt Treason – Teardrop Explodes Catherine Wheel – Crowded House Light My Fire – The Doors Fire – Crazy World of Arthur Brown This Wheel’s On Fire - Julie Driscoll Brian Auger & The Trinity Boom Bang A Bang – Lulu Zoom – Fat Larry’s Band Fire – Kasabian This Fire – Franz Ferdinand Spinning Wheel - Blood, Sweat and Tears Rocket Man – Kate Bush Rocket – Def Leppard Firework – Katy Perry We Didn’t Start The Fire – Billy Joel
(A cherry bomb is a round firecracker, red in color, and approximately one-inch in diameter, with a green water proof fuse sticking out the side. The original cherry bomb contained more than one gram of flash powder and was very powerful. These were declared illegal in 1966 by the federal government. Legal cherry bombs today are restricted to 50 milligrams of flash powder.)

(UFO - A term for a device that spins very fast and lifts high into the sky, only to explode or burst into a special aerial effect. These are also called helicopters, planes, or sky flyers.)
Not forgetting Smoke on the Water and Jumping Jack Flash.
C'mon now Billy. If ever there was ever a night to consolidate your name as the Predo Prince (Billy) and steal the crown from the Monarch that was Glen. (See what I did there??) its tonight.
BTW, you're not allowed to look at the other side. Stands to reason you'll get a good score it you trawl through their shouts. (Down Mac, I said "trawl").
Old Man - Neil Young (Twenty four and there's so much more) Dancing Queen – Abba A New England – Kirsty MacColl I’m Eighteen – Alice Cooper It Was A Very Good Year – Frank Sinatra Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen – Neil Sedaka Sweet Little Sixteen – Chuck Berry When I’m 64 – The Beatles Seventeen – The Sex Pistols At Seventeen – Janis Ian Edge of Seventeen – Stevie Nicks Forever Seventeen – Tim McGraw 22 – Taylor Swift Thirteen – Big Star 7-Teen – The Regents Seasons In the Sun – Terry Jacks Summer (The First Time) - Bobby Goldsboro 17 Again – Eurythmics Ironic – Alanis Morissette The River – Bruce Springsteen
I Saw Her Standing There was played last night – what are the chances of a repeat?
A quick glance on the other side... Like we really do need to hear New England again on GIO! Interesting shout for 2, 4, 6,8 Motorway. I suppose there are numbers involved in ages right enough.
I'm going for Bobby Goldsboro. Great guitar in there.
Howdy pop pickers. Heard my first three minutes of GIO in many moons on bonfire night and it struck me that There's a guy works down the chipshop must be the most played choon on the show. I am sure I have heard it on chip night, work night, songs that mention other singers night, locations night, long titles night, folk with surnames beginning with mac night, songs you learned from your mother father granny granda night, dead pop stars night, female singers night, songs that don't fade out night, non instrumental night, misheard lyrics night, the first record you ever bought night, the song you wished you wrote night, the first single you ever bought night, your favourite 80's song night, songs about liars night, people who wish they were someone else night.....where's captain ramius when you need him
Ah kain. They even started the show with it!!! Could someone who has FB access please put a comment on about it being on AGAIN! Someone there has actually praised the fact.
dale kelvin - I guess you mean 'new' - the new mccartney album? If so, you're right - an absolute revelation ( except for maybe the title track, which is the only safe predictable track on the album). the rest really is relevatory.
Band on the Run was a slow burning thing - I think this may turn out the same, a few listens in, and I'm smitten - even 'the voice' sounds o good form.
I'm still smarting over his non-turn-up-idness. Yes Gaie...I do bear a grudge...though I tune in to bit of his shows...usually in the loo. Thought I'd just throw that in there to unnerve youse lot jx
BTW genuine question. Any reason why I can never post on this site from my iphone. Lets me type my words of wisdom and then takes the piss and refuses to budge. Works fine on laptop.
Paolo, I sometimes have a problem on my iPad. If I type something and then want to amend it before pressing 'publish', it freezes on me. I have to get rid of the keypad bit and zoom out then put the cursor where I need it before typing again.

Previously on the blog...
ReplyDeleteBeen away golfing since Friday morning so missed how your predos got on Billy. Not too good then?
Thanks for the visit Thing-Fish. Had you come in a Halloween skeleton costume we could have quipped "Long time no sea."
That's some round of golf (;-)
DeleteI think it was seven. Not deserving of a halo...
Billy the way I have been playing recently a round could be longer than that.....
DeleteSeven is good!
DeleteThe 10 and a half is going to take a some beating though.
It was several rounds...
I was caught out by people randomly adding Saint to an artist's name.
DeleteI had several rounds on Saturday night. Probably why I was feeling so fragile yesterday (;-)
DeleteWho's going to submit something for the 'me in 3' segment of the newly-extended Roddy Hart show? Jx

Also just remembered Save All Your Kisses For Me but I sincerely hope no-one suggests that (;-)
DeletePete Winfield might be a shoo - in.
DeleteBit heavy on the 17s are ye no?
Possibly. Thought about PW but is that not a play on words about a hit record rather than an age?
DeleteOh, I'm not sure.
DeleteI knew the "bullet" referenced a single that shoots up the chart. I always presumed 18 referred to the singers age. Could be wrong.
I keep telling you. Rockabilly Billy... Stray Cats ~ Sexy & 17
