  7. The country is falling apart. There are no jobs. No one can buy a house. Every second shop is empty. The Euro is going down the tubes.

But, look, there goes the Olympic torch. Things aren't really so bad.

  8. As I understand it, the carrying of the Olympic torch gave an inordinate amount of pleasure to those who were chosen to do so. Thousands of people turned out to watch it and enjoy a short period of community spirit.
Would omitting this small ceremony have improved the country's overall situation? Is it important to be begrudging of people, who through their own merits and efforts in life, often against considerable odds, have earned this moment of glory?
Why is it so necessary nowadays to sneer at and mock people's simple enthusiasms? We are indeed in dire straits (at least in comparison to our own high expectations); the plight of youngsters graduating and unable to find jobs has not passed me by, but I very much doubt if us all being miserable will bring prosperity to the country.

Henri is on holiday and will return with his usual column next week

    1. You're right. What we need are more Olympic torches - everyone should get a shot. They're not working anyway. Let's burn our way back to prosperity.

    2. Shocking waste of taxpayers money. Still the Olympics cae in under the revised budget. A mere increase from £2.5bn to £9.5bn. And of course we get to see a £65m green field. With sheep. Shares in my Croft are available...form an orderly queue.

    3. I stood at The Eric Liddell Centre for the torch relay to pass by. I agree that it seems to be a very exciting thing for the torchbearers and those involved with them and the event-organisation. I did like seeing the widest of grins on the torchbearers faces. I didn't expect it to be very exciting for spectators and it wasn't really, though the Morningside/Bruntsfield crowd were eventually pretty vocal by Edinburgh standards. We were told there would be a mini-'cavalcade' passing-by ahead of the torch...oh yeah?...that translates as a couple of buses full of whoop-whooping strangers...not a clue who they represented. A hyperactive girl, whose job seemed to be to try to whip the crowd into a frenzy by rehearsing cheering and stopping cars by waving-at and thumbs-upping drivers, gave it her all but I'm glad to say we Edinburghers, though some succumbed, were in the main as aloof as ever until we decided we should cheer of our own accord...Hurrah!...and a wee side kick of the heels when nobody's looking.

    4. ...and another thing...they were doing a torch-'handover' right in front of the Eric Liddell Centre...a community centre where Liddell used to worship and teach which now serves as a working memorial to surely a truly inspirational Olympian. The staff from the centre did play the theme from Chariots of Fire when the two torcgbearers were handing over, which would have been a lovely gesture had they not been using a circa 1970 single speaker...I didn't hear a note of it. Surely the organisors could've supplied something better at such an important point on the torch route? Just a thought!

    5. To me the Olympics today is about big sponsors like them (http://www.london2012.com/about-us/the-people-delivering-the-games/olympic-partners/) and athletes being one step ahead of the drugs tests.

Gone are the days of guys in sports jackets who were draughtsmen 6 days a week, ran a bit in the evenings and did it for love of the sport.

Who cares if 0.02s is shaved of the 100 m record?

  9. The error of our ways has become all too apparent. It's the food, not the music, that's the issue in people's lives - that's where the real human interest is.

If only we had taken a leaf out of young Martha's blog - photographed our dinner, found a way of putting it on the blog, and written about it they'd never have dared close us down.

I'm hoping Julie's Euro food f***book will turn into a Marthaesque type blog - the blog where you choose the dinner!

    1. I've thought about a blog HH but think I'd need a decent camera (actually I don't own a camera other than the phone one) to start that...and non-shaky hands as the FB photies are dreadful (and I could do better at presentation). Did the same thing for the last world cup. Thought the Euro 2012 Tea Time Challenge would be easier but It's getting boring with the limited pool of countries to choose from. Germany tonight...bratwurst with warm potato salad and green beans! Cynics should note that I've resisted telling GIO about my culinary challenge in a bid to get a song played.

  10. the olympics are wonderful. they were wonderful when they were amateur they are wonderful today.
on the question of 'what is the alternative to a heavily sponsored olympics' the question should read 'where is the alternative to heavily sponsored olympics'......i dont see anybody rushing forward to finance it themselves.
as for the torch............i think we're quite fortunate to have been included in the route given an attitude like,oh, 'lets fly the saltire in an olympic venue'.....but what made my day with the torch was that it blew out on lewis!! surely somebody must have stuck their heid oot the croft that morning tae warn them.
