Well, it's coming up for a couple of years since the blog closed, so it's kinda remarkable that you've kept it going for so long, Norrie.
Things change - the show has changed out of all recognition, I think, though the underlying identity crisis ( Smooth Radio meets Guardian reader) continues to make it frustrating to listen to.
Perhaps it's to do with budgets, but in the past Bryan would frequently talk about checking out requests in the afternoon etc, but my impression is they turn up much later and do the job.Maybe the producers have less time. I think that lack of passion shows through, and in a way that enveighs against anyone bothering to try and suggest things that are at the margin - it's pointless.
Tonight I'm on the point of wrapping it for good - you can't get a decent old soul record played unless you're name is Fergie from Aberdeen. How else could you pick Percy Sledge over Solomon Burke? I'm not saying that Percy is bad, just that the pre requiste is Fergie ( the expert) said "You don't play enough Percy". So they play Percy.
How many Solomons are played on GIO?
I may even be suffering delusions of persecution, because I'm convinced they deliberately don't play my requests in favour of developing a more sycophantic audience.
I think my time has finaly passed with GIO.
I am keen to have another meet up with my blogging peers though.
Well, I thought,'I'm not going to do myself any favours here' so I took some of it down - some of it is what I'll be saying in other places in support of the surreal fantasy, 'the Henri Hanah Shuffle Show', so didn't want to have that picked up on, upon reflection.
But thanks, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who thinks like this.I'm sure they see me as an enormous pain in the arse for not liking endless renditions of 'A Case Of You' - but, fuck it, even Joni Mitchell thinks it's over the top, not just me.I'm too old to be bothered looking for 'the meaning'.. i just wanna get loaded and have a good time...
GIO has long since passed its day for me - still shove in the occasional suggestion out of - what - perversity? - but I don't listen any more. What I would miss is the friends here - the themes are just a hook and the programme holds little interest for any of us, but I'd miss checking the thread, even though attempts at getting some kind of conversation going frequently fall unheaded.
As far as the GIO playlist and no doubt most radio playlists - it's annoying enough for us to know that anything out of the ordinary won't get played - how much more frustrating must it be for the bands making glorious music, who know beyond a shadow of a doubt that their songs won't get played. I tweeted GIO a request for an Unwinding Hours track, just because, and the band tweeted back that 'I'd crash the car if I heard that on the radio'.
It's surprising you've taken so long to reach this stage of disillusionment. Following the rejection of total withdrawal the next phase is resigned acceptance and amused detachment.
When a man is tired of blogging he is tired of life.
ReplyDeleteYou've done well up to now. You don't need to post regularly if you find it tiring.
Perhaps a get-together would revive us.
a get-together would be good.
ReplyDeleteI'll take over the blog if you're really fed-up, Norrie. . Assuming all I have to do is renew the page every so often.
What, like every time you score?
We haven't organised a wee swally in Edinburgh for a while.
:o)
sadly you'd never get the page renewed if it were every time I scored :-(
Deleteour last swally was in Edinburgh wasn't it? Or did youse all sneak off for one without inviting me?
DeleteDunno. Too drunk to remember.
There's a guy on Facebook who doesn't know the difference between a wafer and waiver. Don't leave any paper lying about.
ReplyDeleteThere's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis.
Either he's wavering or havering.
To paraphrase the great KC -
ReplyDelete"Dont go, dont go, Norrie please dont go".
Struth!
Delete;-)
You should be concerned about Bryan's Union Jack pen.
DeleteFFS, I thought you were going to say pencil!

Looks like its time for a blogotariat request. Pick the soul searcher Henri and we'll all request it
DeleteI'm Spartacus......
BTW 'enri, this mornings comment re Billy Bragg was on the wire & you shouldn't have edited your post ;-)

Yup, the 2nd anniversary might just be the right time for a blogotariat hoedown.

And now I'm late for work, hell....

Delete*unheeded.
DeleteI am detached, but I'd be more amused if there were a decent alternative for my teatime listening.
I was referring to Henri. You're long past all that.
DeleteExactly what is it you're referring to Glen, Gaie's scoring ability or failure to tune into the show where you don't choose the music?
DeleteRight, Big Eck, that's no way to get a YES from me.
DeleteHenri - the book "Over, Under, Sideways, Down" looks like it might be fun.
ReplyDeleteI think I got the name right. (The book's).
Dont forget to support www.streetchildworldcup.org Kicking off this week.
Henri - the Book
DeleteSounds like one of the prisoners in The Great Escape.
Here Norrie, do we allow the f word on this blog?
Do we f***!
DeleteYou ought to check out @angrysalmond ;-)
DeleteWTF?
ReplyDeleteDC, if you like GE, I think you will also like AMWWF.
Quick! Send for the A Team! Someone has just kidnapped Gaie!
Deletethis is Greenock, try the Quarrier St Young Team.
DeleteHenri's new novel is on Facebook.

DeleteAnd very good it is too.
DeleteTongue in cheek admission that their theme setting is in need of support. Mine's a cracker ;-)
