This feels like the umpteenth time I've requested a Sparks' song based on their November, 1974 gig at the Apollo.

    It might even get played!

So much more convenient not having to remove one's shoes for airport security...

  8. Anybody know where Roxy John is these days?
I was thinking about him this morning as I listened to "Heart Still Beating" in the car.
Roxy's live album from 1982, it has good versions of Avalon and Love is the Drug as well as covers Like a Hurricane and Jealous Guy. Not forgetting a Glen favourite, A Song For Europe. Epic. I comment the album to the Blog.

  16. first time I've been to King Tut's - really liked it as a venue till the main band came on (Pale Fire) and the audience drifted in from the bar, seemingly determined to keep the conversations going whatever. Two lovely acoustic songs were ruined (for me) by the non-stop chatter. Shame, as the band were great. Liked the support band James Jack too. There was also a solo singer/guitarist called Mayor Stubbs. He seemed decidedly eccentric, but bit of a whizz on the acoustic guitar. Ticket price for 3 acts was £6.50.

    1. I was lucky enough to see Kinky Friedman there, many moons ago.

      Great venue, great show!

    2. Great venue, had no idea it was so small. But that's the drawback as well when a few decide to carry on talking and laughing at full volume. Makes me think back in amazement at the Low Anthem gig in Òran Mòr where there was not a sound from the audience during the quiet songs.

But you know, it must be so hard for the many bands trying to make it - how can anyone make a living off playing in a venue so small with ticket prices that are laughable? Pale Fire got a rave review for their album from Alan Morisson in the Herald, which is why I listened to it in the first place. I fully expected the whole audience to be word-perfect last night, but not so. So unless you're lucky enough to get packaged and sold to the radio stations chances are your band will sadly have to pack it in.
