On my return from USA, having once again being amazed at the amount of radio airplay Billy Joel still gets, I decided to research why.
In the course of this I came across a list of the songs most played on the radio, jukeboxes and clubs in the UK – ever. The list was generated in 2003 so the full effect of GIO has no influence. (No Blondie or Proclaimers in there). Here is the Top Ten. Can you guess what they are? No cheating.

1 A certain Aberdonian murdered this song in a cover version
2 EZ would be unhappy that this wasn’t at number 1
3 This time the cover is the hit. Didn’t play it at my wedding and wont be playing at my funeral either.
    4 Phil and Don song
    5 When Kevin was Robin
6 She was only seventeen according to the swedesters.
    7 Elvis song
8 Still supports Celtic and Scotland for some reason
    9 Beatles song
    10 Beatles song

    8. Gaie – its not about the words anyway. Its about the tune. If you are into lyrics get yourself a good book of poems. ( I can recommend David Essex’s Travelling Tinker Man and Other Rhymes as a good read. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Travelling-Tinker-Man-Other-Rhymes/dp/1784082341.) KC and Moby don’t worry themselves about getting the lines right. One on repeat is enough. And take the LE’s Brand New Combine Harvester as an example. Though Ann is clearly struck by the acre issue in the song, it is the melody that made the two versions of the song No 1 both sides of the Atlantic. It certainly wasn’t Melanie and Barry Wurzel’s penmanship.

    9. I almost never hear/pay attention to the lyrics, Adam, it was the tunes I was talking about. I've got lots of good books of poems, mind, was quite keen on it at school and keep meaning to go back and read them, As with many other good intentions...................
