Songs You Never Play

Request them and GIO will probably not play them either!

  1. Norrie, there must be something in the Springsteen catalogue that'll meet the ambiguity of today's show?

    1. Someone's asked for Lawyers, Guns And Money. They've already played it.

Surely a great opportunity for the rarely heard Troggs Tape

    2. Coincidentaly I was watching "This Is Spinal Tap" on Saturday and in the Extras there is an interview with Reg where he talks about that interview and how it was inspirational to Rob Reiner and Christopher Guest.

    1. I remember thinking that the last time we had a similar theme. I was desperately disappointed so I'm not getting my hopes up this time.

    2. But its pretty hard to negotiate this:

"We devote tonight's show to the songs by artists who don't normally get a look in and songs you seldom hear on the radio. Share your hidden gem with us....and let's shine a light on the underplayed but brilliant tracks."

Can't see any loopholes in there, can you?

There might be some crap requested and played but they can't be repeats.

    3. "seldom" and "underplayed" imply repeats

  4. It was indeed a good show - a good representation by the former bloggers, too.

Turning back a thread, I still think the show is the best they have and on nights like these, unmissbale. If they performed like this routinely, they would be compulsory listening, it's a mystery why they remain so conservative in their scope when the evidence is staring them in the face - but it's all been said before.

Bryan is a good presenter (you can tell by the deps, even Janice wasn't that great, Alison sounded lame and the decorators just deplorable - Ross wasn't bad). Yes, they are all nice people,Miss Babs is unconditionally helpful and it is a difficult thing to pull off live. I think Babs is a good foil for Bryan, unlike the other producers, who sound too timid to cross the threshold and become a 'personality' that could boost the presenatation.

It's interesting, on nights like this you get a little insight into what Radio Scotland could be and how diverse and eclectic the audience's taste really is. If everybody just requested the less obvious, always, eventually, they have to play 'something'... like playing the drums, "eventually, you've got to hit them".(G Baker)

The station doubtless they're really eclectic when in fact they're just hung up on emergent Scottush bands and singer songwriters, especially if they hang about Nashville and/or have the surmane Wainwright.Last year's blondes were Frightened Rabbit and First Aid Kit - the latter you could hear on GIO, Rikki Ross, Tom Morton, Bruce Macgregor, Ian Anderson and Roddy Hart - and Janice, (if she was still going, she'll be on afternoons with more chattering and little music, from April). They play different music from the commercial stations, but it's just as narrow in it's scope. The previous blonde was 'Lissie' - recently Tom played both First Aid Kit and Lissie consecutively. Boring Boring Boring.

I'll shall shed no tears for the Tom Morton Show - utterly predictable, utterly lethargic and utterly inane, at least it's going to be on in the dead of night where inane is thought to be an advantage because no one's listening. Who'll fall asleep at the wheel first: Iain or Tom? Both sound bored rigid. I know I am.

As someone who has made no secret of my desire to present, I listen carefully and feel frustrated by what I hear.. Jeff could have used some of that time to try something new......I'm tired of what Donald Rumsfeld called the "known knowns".

      Henri,

It's been quite a while since I listened to the Iain Anderson Show, (my working hours mean he's on whilst I'm snoring), but I don't recall him ever being boring! If he was bored, he would be far too polite to say so!

Apart from that and the wee dig at my beloved Alison, I largely agree. And, of course, everyone thinks their taste in music is eclectic and everyone thinks they have a G.S.O.H.! Especially between now and the 14th.

  5. Good to hear from you Henri!
I haven't looked at the playlist for tonight yet as I'm waiting for Billy and Glen's review.
And maybe even the Metro's if he's got reception in the blizzard.

    1. I didn't listen (mandolin lesson) but from the playlist it's well known acts and lesser known numbers.

We could start a petition for Henri as presenter.

  7. haven't a scooby, Adam.

I tweeted a couple of suggestions last night, one of which was played and hailed as Bryan's song of the night(and it turns out to the delight of the singer, which is really warm and fuzzy). I didn't hear much of the programme (nightclass) but the playlist seemed to be mostly well-known bands.

I'd go back to listening if they were more bold in song-choice, because I'm really parochial and enjoy the Scottish connection. I also thoroughly enjoy listening to emergent Scottish bands, which, since Henri doesn't like that aspect, simply confirms that keeping everyone happy is a difficult act. His point that given rein, people will be more adventurous, is spot-on and one that GIO has resolutely refused to take up. The only reason I connected with the show last night was because the theme offered the chance of a less than deadly dull playlist. Otherwise I've got out of the habit and can't see myself being drawn back in unless things change an awful lot.

  8. Zycinski - Been selling the shirts for a couple of years now, "Dumb & Dumber" on a Saturday are the only ones safe.
Wallace - Adds nothing of value to her presence on National radio.
Burnett - Decent guy but working on an exit strategy .. look-out Robbie Shepherd.
