  1. Is Gut Fawkes night a west coast thing?

  2. I'm sick of hearing in the media that the UK don't 'do' Hallowe'en. I can't remember a time when Scottish children didn't go out guising. Calling it trick or treating and demanding sweets or you'll have your house egged is an unwanted, recent development but, typically, the English (supposed to be British) media don't do their research properly. I've always known children chapping the door in costume, singing songs or telling jokes/poems for sweeties. Why, one year my Dad was overwhelmingly (and very surprisingly) impressed by George Kane's burped rendition of the National Anthem! Jx

    1. I think you can move your ire onto Guy Fawkes night now. Mind you I was quite interested to read that guising comes from the notion of dressing up the kids in old clothes and disguising them so the spirits would not steal them away on eve of the hallows. Or something like that. Of copurse we only had old clothes and that is probably why I was never stolen by the gohstly spirits...
